Hello Fellow Dartingtonians Just wanted to say "Congratulations on the website". Also, I know for a fact that Sally Dunn and Cindy Baldwin (Greeting and Salutation to you both!) are at least 36 years of age respectively however am sure they don't look it! How do I know this? Well, I remember Sally and Cindy from B/A - group. Sally used to shine her torch from her room (Chimmels) into mine (Orchards) at night. Morse code was never her forte! LOL! I remember Cindy from one epic game of British Bulldog in the gym hall where she dislocated her arm. Ouch! Didn't she have a younger sister and an older sister (Tammy)? And wasn't there a Led Zeppelin connection? Toby Gribble was in B-group with me and his Dad was headmaster around 1979. Sam Gribble was about 17-18 if I recall correctly. Paul and Pamela Biddle (fantastic house parents and teachers) were in their twenties when I was there. So does that count as "grassing them up?" ;-) Kindest regards to you all Chris PS Does anyone know what happened to Rhondi Miller?

I was evaccuated to Dartington Hall sometime in 1940. I was only about 18months old. My father was in the R.A.F but unfortunately was killed in Germany in 1945. I remember we had a horse which we children loved to ride, piling about 6 children onto his back. The horse was called Friday. My best friend was a little blonde girl called Sylvia. There were American serviceman living in tents on the grounds. We had afternoon sleeps in a lovely sunny room, with nurses watching over us. I would love to hear from anyone else that was there at the same time please? My name was Maureen Coombes. Anyone remember me?

HiAnne, I'm wondering if you can help me with rather a strange query! I'm a feature writer with the Sunday Mirror. I'm just doing some research into a new film called Domino, to be directed by Tony Scott and starring Keira Knightley. It's based on the life of Domino Harvey, the daughter of British actor Laurence Harvey, who was a model and then became a bounty hunter. In the course of my research, I came across the name on your website. It's such an unusual name that I wondered if it might be the same girl. She'd be about 34 now. But I was hoping that you might have some idea of where she might be. Sent: 02 November 2004 16:46 To: anne@dartingtonhallschool.co.uk Subject: Re: No Subject Hiya Anne, Oh God, please dont worry! I completely understand your friends' concerns. But truly, its just a 'this is the incredible real-life story of the woman who the new blockbuster starring hot starlet Keira Knightley is based on' kind of feature. I'm desperately trying to track her down because ideally we'd like to do it as an interview. But it's proving surprisingly difficult because she doesnt seem to be working as a bounty hunter any more. As far as the school is concerned, I just wanted to talk to former classmates rather than detail anything re the school itself. You know the kind of thing - 'we always knew Domino wouldn't settle down to be an accountant', 'Keira's pretty but Domino has something special' etc etc. Obviously, ideally I prefer to name people but sometimes people really are too shy to have their name in the paper! I'm happy to speak to you or anyone else over the phone if you want a bit more detail. Ideally, really, we'd like to run a feature as soon as possible. The movie isnt out for a while but Keira is hot, hot, hot!! Thanks a lot, Louxx

20 Oct 2004 No matter what I try, I can't get into "discussion board" .. just keeps saying they've already got a name on my account, but I can't remember my password .. rats ! Just wanted to comment I've been googling Dartington in older times, found some interesting stuff relating to medieval location called Cockington .. owned by same family way back .. and it keeps referring to "the Honour of Dartington" as if it was called that in medieval times. But can't find out more .. ring any bells with anyone ? If so, will you email me at <misuffolk@yahoo.com.au>. Michael Butler recently contacted me, now in Canada, and I've fired off emails and a photo, but no reply. No doubt he's busy at sea ? And if anyone knows how to get past Discussion Board register, I'd love to know that too. Regards, good wishes, from erstwhile Mary Logie

Pat Kitto former wife of Dartington School secretary Dick Kitto has died in Sheffield after a long illness at 88. In the fifties Pat was a housemother at Aller Park, in the seventies she and Dick ran the Dartington annexe at Conisborough for three years. She was also much involved in starting the Natural Health Centre in Totnes and worked for many years with cancer patients. There will be a memorial service at some stage at Dartington .

Hi everyone I have been looking at the old photos, good memories. Went to the 1996 reunion, have yet to visit the Trafalgar Square ones. I am still living in Devon, never left the place! Got 2 kids, work as a local authority Arts Officer. Not married, still crazy about bikes, got a Yamaha 600 and love it (I never grew out of that!). I still see some people from DHS that are left living around here, Orlando Rutter, David Charnaud, Olly Fogdon, Fi Butcher and some others. Devon and Totnes are still the same, the school is not, it makes me mad! I would love to hear from anyone who went to DHS between 1976 and 1979. Ishbel (Ish)

Documentary about life in a large cross-generational Step Family Channel Four Television and Wellpark Productions have just begun doing research for a major documentary about step families or reconstituted families. We are still at the very early stages of our research so we are not, as yet, asking people to take part in the film. We just want to talk – off the record. We want to hear about your many and varied experiences of step family life. Everything you tell us at this stage will be in strictest confidence. We would particularly like to hear from people who can look back with the benefit of hindsight on the highs and lows, the funny times and the difficult times of living in a large and complicated step family. We want to talk to all family members – adults, children and grandparents. Are you, or do you know someone who has a complicated step family arrangement maybe going back over two generations? We have a tight deadline so if you are willing to share your experiences with us we would appreciate it if you would get in touch, in confidence, sooner rather than later. 020 9832 0133 07768686487 We will return all calls. wellparkproductions@yahoo.com Sue Bourne – Producer/Director Kirsty Cunningham – Associate Producer

I've recently moved the set of Dartington photos I posted last year to another server so the link from the photos page no longer works. For those who've not found them yet, and all those that have but can't find their way back (!), they can now be reached at http://www.alastairmckenzie.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/dartphot.html

Does any recall any of the Sayer family during their time at Dartington Hall. William and Richard (born 1963) would have been there in the Seventies and Elizabeth gave foxglove girls school red and yellow foxhole dartington hall school totnes south devon as an address where she worked in the Eighties. They and their elder sister Caroline are the children of Colin and Pat Sayer(nee Price)my sister. I lost touch with them many years ago. By the time I tried to make contact the school had closed and all that was left was the web site with the names William and Richard Sayer on the lost_ones page. Very tantalising Anne Hooper believes the family lived in Sherborne .Glos and there could be a connection with the Sherborne Hall Commune and also with the Grosvenor Road Twickenham squat. Read further on http://www.peterprice.net/mysister2.html I would be grateful for your response (even if negative) Thank you Peter

Mick Marsh had died, and his funeral will be in Dartington Church at eleven o'clock on Monday. His wife Barbara is still living in Warren Lane, and her daughter Elizabeth is with her. Mick and Barbara, were caretakers of Aller Park for many many years. The address for letters would be 7 Warren Lane. Do you know people who would like to hear of all this? Extremely sad to hear the demise of a genuine English eccentric and musical genius, anyone who can remember his beard and pipe, will automatically think of the quiet voice and warm smile. I visited in the 80's about 10 years after I left and he took only a few seconds to recognise me as the boy who used to attend guitar lessons with Ruby and clean the music rooms. Tim Moore was an influence on my life. His kind don't come around very often.

I've only just found out (10 March) that Tim has died. I taught at Dartington in the 60s and got to know Tim very well. Amongst other things, I ran the Stage Group and we did the lighting for his musicals. Tim lived a few streets away from me in Cambridge and I used to meet him in the local shops and at tbe bus stop every so often. I also went to his 80th birthday tribute when a group of musicians gave a concert comprised of Tim's compositions. He remained the same into his 80s: shy, quiet, unwilling to talk about himself and delightfully eccentric. It's a very sad day to see this link with Dartington's glory gone.

Goodbye Tim. I'll never forget those gigs at the Dartmouth Inn and Bocaddon. He was a wonderful teacher and treated us Toetappers like real musicians, which we probably weren't but which he very definitely was. There would be a certain time in an evening after we'd all warmed up and had a few pints (of course) when Tim would carefully fit a Havana stub into his old cigar holder, spark it up, lean back and grin into his beard, and launch into some lovely, sparkly intro. All was right with the world. I'll miss him. Thanks for everything, Tim.

Tim M. was one of the greatest. I mean he didn't even mind I nicked his cigars. He came to see me once over a music matter and opened my desk drawer to get the manuscript, there on top was one of his larger and more exotic cigars. He espied it. "I hope you smoke them properly, remember not to let the flame touch the tobacco when lighting it" was his only comment. He shall be missed by many. Malc

Tim Moore was one of the foundation stones of Dartington when I was there. He lived just below my family in Black House and was always kind to me and to my sister Shelagh when we were 5-10 year old pests. Later on when I was at Foxhole and trying to do something musical - I had guitar lessons with the indomitable Ruby Godwin - I decided to do Grade 5 Music Theory with Tim. Saffron Phillips (sadly gone now) was the only other pupil in the class. As a great tribute to Tim, I passed the exam. I remember the beard, the Pickwickian figure, the chuckle, the ever-present pipe, and the cross-stitch motto in his room that said 'You cannot unscramble eggs'. A sad loss and a great and kindly and creative man.

I drop in from time to time and occasionally have contact with old school friends - usually via the FR site, which is great. I always miss the reunions on account of being here in Sydney. However I couldn't help noticing lately the number of people here in Australia and thought that maybe when the 2005 reunion is on we could have an Australian event at the same time. By then the technology would probably even make a video link-up easy. Even if its just a BBQ/dinner it might be fun to compare old DHS notes. I won't do the usual Sydney centric thing of suggesting this city, but I'm sure we could reach consensus in this big place. (Mind you if you haven't seen Marrickville, you haven't lived!!!) Just a thought!!

Hi - as you see, new email address. Visiting the Dartington website is very reassuring, after almost fifty years of not being in contact with Dartingtonians. My foremost memory of Foxhole is being at Moot; and looking at photos of students on the website, I am again astounded at the respect and devotion shown by staff to the nurturing of adult minds in young bodies. As I settle into the amazing reversal, familiar to many, that of a young mind in an old body :-D !, I am so glad to have been at Dartington between 1952-1957. Can one ever forget playing the Spoon Race, Racing Demon in the attic above Blue & Green at end of term, midnight walks in the Hall Gardens on Midsummer's Night, dancing to the Trad Jazz band, Curry giving us the day off to toboggan ? Keep well everybody, and love to all.

Every so often I find somebody I knew, either second hand, or by accident. Most recently Carol Rushton who happened to be in touch with my Dad,of all people for a TV documentary. Living in Florida since 1957, spent a life in TV, Radio and advertising, still at it--can't aford to retire, would be too bore anyway, just to sit and shrivel up. Did find out what happened to Lally Cabot (still at Dartington) Mary Logie (Australia). Julian Curry crops up on my telly from time to time like an unexpected but welcomed guest. But I've completely lost the thread on my man Mike Butler and so many others. If you're out there, drop me an email, let me know how it all worked out.

I was at Aller Park and Foxhole for about ten years from 1971. Mixed but ultimately good memories - what a magically beautiful place it was. The other day for some reason I had a vivid recollection of riding down the Knickerbocker Breaker, on some crazy bike concocted by Mick(?) in the basement of AP. Left Devon for London much too early, worked mainly in publishing, played in a few bands. I've been married for nine years, and we've lived in Vermont for the last four. We own a gourmet food shop/restaurant and life is mad and very sweet, made infinitely more so this March by a baby daughter. I dusted off my very defective trumpet the other day and gave her a few notes - she was politely curious. Good to see so many familiar names in the guestbook - love to everyone who knew me.

Hello Lovely people................... We (Giff and I) have decided that the MSN isn't excactly what we need so, we have bought a new system. The New discussion boards allows a safer way of leaving your details...photos..etc and hopefully a better way of communicating to each other. You have to become members and fill in a dataform... you will need to add your name, your email address and when you were at the school. It is optional if you want to leave other details.( and photo..either of then or now) Hopefully everyone who visits the site will join....this will then mean having an up to date school database online.....more photos..scanned images etc... Hope to hear from you soon.. Anne

I'm greatly saddened to hear about the plans for the Dartington Hall area but not in the least surprised. I have many friends throughout the South of England and have heard that the same is happening throughout the country. The current labour government seems bent on the total destruction of the countryside in an effort to move people from already overcrowded cities. They consider only the numbers and not the logistics of such an act. Unemployment, agriculture, infrastructure, ecology and culture within such an area are irrevocably changed forever. While I have no wish to be overly political about these dramatic changes to lifestyle they must be viewed as part of a master plan for the UK which includes making it impossible to: drive into a city without losing your car; park outside a shop without getting a ticket or expect your train to get there on-time/at-all [delete as apropriate]. For my part I have chosen to run away to a place where it is still legal to fly a union jack and the MMR is an option. "Vive La France". 8¬)

Dear all at Dartington Hall School and those connected in the past. I would like your help with a problem we face that is outlined in the letter below I have written to the local planners and the Dartington Hall trustees: Dear..... I am writing to express our dismay at the proposed development named Dartington 2020. I am a local General Practitioner and have lived in the area for 25 years and in Dartington for 8 years. My wife is an Advisory Teacher whose work involves visiting schools all over Devon and Torbay. Our concerns are as follows: · Dartington is a village at present and this is the reason many of the inhabitants chose to live here. The proposed 300 new houses would change the whole character of the area. The official District Councils development boundary for the village would be flouted. · The area has already had 80 new houses over the last 10 years and there are additional threats with alternative proposals for the Puddavine site and, we believe the Huxhams Cross area. · The local infrastructure is not capable of handling such a scale of development. Existing roads are already at gridlock level at certain times of the day and even worse during the summer months. This makes it seriously difficult for my wife and I to carry out our important roles efficiently. An estimated additional 500 vehicles would bring the area to a standstill. This could mean huge resources later having to be spent by the local council to produce new or improved roads which would potentially ruin other local rural landscapes. · Local schooling is inadequate for current demands and would certainly not be able to cope with such an increase. · The proposed development would only provide a small amount of “affordable housing” for genuine local needs. The remainder is likely to be relatively expensive housing which will no doubt be bought by people from outside the area. No good case has been made for any benefit this would bring to Dartington except to swell the coffers of Dartington Hall Trust. · The field proposed for development has been proposed as an Area of Great Landscape Value. It is a major contribution to the beauty of the landscape of Dartington as the enclosed photo will demonstrate. To destroy this would be devastating to the local character. · There will be additional pollution including noise and light which will further damage the local community. · Dartington is a popular tourist attraction which draws people to the area. Such attraction will be seriously impaired by destroying the rural nature of this part of the village. Dartington Hall Trust is a registered charity with the following registered aims: What General Charitable PurposesEducation/TrainingArts/cultureEnvironment/Conservation/HeritageEconomic/Community development/Employment Who Other charities/Voluntary bodiesOther defined groupsGeneral public/Mankind How Provides buildings/facilities/open spaceSponsors or undertakes researchActs as umbrella or resource body It would appear to us that several areas here are at conflict in particular: Environment, Conservation, Heritage and provision of open space. The Planning Profile and Development Strategy as outlined in the South Hams District Council Local Plan indicates several “key planning objectives” that the Dartington 2020 proposal would appear to contravene. · “To conserve, sustain and enhance the area’s outstanding environmental qualities, local distinctiveness and sites of environmental importance, in terms of landscape character and diversity, wildlife and habitats, townscape and archaeology.” · “To look at each town and village and provide for its needs in a sustainable manner, protecting and maintaining its distinctive local character and viability.” New developments are required to: · “place no further strain on already over stretched resources at any time during the development period i.e. infrastructure improvements should occur prior to or in phase with the development needing to draw on them” · “assimilate into and enhance the overall landscape and enhance the bio-diversity of the area.” None of these objectives and requirements is met. Specific reference in the Local Plan to Dartington Village makes the following statements: · “A Development Boundary has been drawn tightly around the village within which development is normally acceptable. This has been based on a careful assessment of the character and setting of the village together with other important considerations, such as access and service provision. Within the Development Boundary only limited scope for development exists and this is subject to the usual planning considerations.” · “The landscape setting of Dartington is very important. The area to the north and east of the settlement, based on the Dart Valley, is an Area of Great Landscape Value ( AGLV). The plan proposes a new AGLV based on the Bidwell Brook to the west. Much of the countryside around Dartington is steeply sloping and open to distant views. Any development proposals in the village should most carefully respect this sensitive landscape.” The Dartington 2020 proposals suggest building outside the “Development Boundary”. They also propose building on the proposed Area of Great Landscape Value. The building of 300 houses would certainly not “respect this sensitive landscape”. We strongly urge you to consider the severely damaging impact such proposals would have on Dartington and to resist them with all vigour. Yours sincerely Edward Southall and Anne Davenport

Photos 1972 -1973 I've found some pictures I took at Dartington (or of Dartington people) in the early seventies. For the time-being they are residing on some server space I have at Demon... http://www.classictravel.demon.co.uk/Dartington/dartphot.html Anne is going to put at link on the photos page. The idea is that later on, when missing names have been put to faces and caption errors corrected, I'll download them onto a CD-rom and Anne can host them on the www.dartingtonhallschool.co.uk site. In the meantime, you are welcome to go and have a browse... Alastair McKenzie

Anne Baldwin Hooper told me to put a message in the guestbook.I found the name Aaron Broido on the schools home page. Actually I am looking for a couple I met in London about 15 years ago, when I did an au-pair job there. Their names are Michael and Lali Broido. I met Michael in a pottery class and he invited me home, where I met his wife Lali and we spend some time together, going to the theatre etc. I lost contact over the years. I keep thinking of them and would like to contact them somehow. I guess Aaron is one of their sons and hope somebody can help me. Thank you !!! Petra

I heard about friends reunited and tried it out only to find my brither Paul Martin had got there first. I have also signed on for my other school and have discovered recently how miserable so many of my contemporaries were - I was happy at Dartington, Foxhole in the good old days of Hu and Lois I remember complaining about apathy amoungst my contemporaries and finding out how hard it is to do thing by committee.

I was only at Aller Park from 1981-83 but it was such a fantastic place that I feel as though I was there for longer. I've always felt I really missed out by not going to Foxhole. It's good to see that so many of the people I was at Aller Park with have signed up here. If any of you remember me please get in touch. Txx

What a surprise to find this on the website! Sad, too, to have missed the reunions - but will definately make the next one. Some of the names missing from my era - Peter Martindale, Kenreth Markham, Nina Havers, Jane Townsend - where are you now? Some of you will remember my interests with school farm horses - Punch and Duchess. I still work with Shires, managing a stable of urban working horses for Bradford Council, challenging but fun! Would love to hear from you, Peter

With the beauty and vision of the school still extant, one wonders how many who now visit this site are aware of a major change coming to Dartington, -a threat greater than any since Dorothy & Leonard were alive? This threat is the plans that present trustees of Dartington have, to build new houses and industrial units on the Meadowbrook land (beside Broom Park, down to Week) and at Webbers yard. The proposal to swamp Dartington village with 1,000 new people, (and attendent cars etc), -plus new industrial estates, in a village that has already seen more than it's fair share of new development is a disasterous one. An action committee has been set up, (called provisionally D.A.D.D. ("Dartington Against Disasterous Development") and more will be heard from us in the near future, (website etc) and plans to subvert the Trust's proposals will be announced. We hope that all who value the school and it's environment will lend their support to the campaign... Thankyou.

Well what a great site! Well done Anne etc. I was at Dartington from 1966 to 1982, starting at the Old Postern when it was nursery with Edna Pitman. Moved on to Aller Park (woodwork with Bernard, 'Gribb Grubs', Tony 'put that chew in the box boy' Barnes, big games of 'kick the can' at break-time etc) and then to Foxhole, where I met some fantastic people (staff and pupils) and didn't do much work! Have been working in business magazine publishing for about 12 years following a period in the wine trade. Married for 7 years with almost three year old daughter. Lived in London for the last 16 years but still get to visit Dartington as my brother lives in Kingbridge. Would be great to hear from anybody who remembers me. Met many old friends at the reunion and found out that it is very difficult to play the drums with Tim's Toe Tappers after a 12 year break!!
